Lifeguard
Under the direction of the Pool Manager(s), the Lifeguard provides immediate security and life safety services to patrons of the Columbus Municipal Swimming Pool. This includes, but is not limited to, providing attentive observation of conduct of swimmers and patrons and participating in emergency response situations as needed. Position also requires employee to provide routine maintenance and custodial services to the pool, bath house and pool area.
Essential Functions
- Provides immediate life safety supervision of swimmers and patrons within the pool and its confines
- Provides emergency response and rescue in lifesaving situations and provides first aid as needed
- Enforces conduct of pool patrons in compliance with established pool regulations and proper conduct codes deemed reasonable for a public-use facility
- Provides routine maintenance to the facility ensuring orderliness, safety and cleanliness of the facility and surrounding park area. Includes, but not limited to, cleaning of restrooms, dressing areas and common areas of the bath house, cleaning of the swimming pool deck and other common areas, mowing of lawn within pool confines, picking up and disposing of litter, emptying trash receptacles, vacuuming and cleaning of the pool
- Provides courteous responses to citizen inquiries about the pool, regulations and safety practices
- Recommends disciplinary measures to the managers for unruly patrons; provides conflict resolution as needed to direct patrons in proper conduct expectations to enforce life safety and community use principles
- Assists other pool staff in admissions and concessions services
- Performs other services as needed
Required Experience & Qualifications
- Minimum age of sixteen (16) years old
- Red Cross, YMCA, or Ellis Lifesaving certification or certification from a similar recognized program in lifesaving and water rescue
- First Aid and CPR training and certification
- Ability to display proficiency in swimming and lifesaving skills and practices
- Ability to meet and work with the general public of all ages in customer service, conflict resolution, and problem-solving area
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to work long hours outside in inclement weather conditions
- Ability to operate pool maintenance and lawn maintenance equipment
Skills
- Knowledge of lifesaving practices and principles
- Knowledge of first aid and CPR principles and practices
- Ability to work with and supervise large groups of patrons of varying age levels
- Ability to make reasonable decisions regarding patron conduct and standards and ability to properly communicate such with/to the patrons
- Ability to resolve disputes among patrons
- Ability to teach aquatic skills to patrons of varying age levels
- Ability to foresee, prevent and troubleshoot problems associated with the pool facility and its patrons
